Leveraging Human Dynamics to Communicate Data Management’s Value to the Organization

Abstract: IT professionals include highly creative people who have mastered operating in a rapidly changing, complex business environment. As the pace of change in IT continues to accelerate, demands on IT professionals around the world continue to grow at an exponential rate. Business managers and others in the client community continuously use terms like, “value added”, “improving the bottom line”, “meeting and exceeding customer needs”, etc. IT / Data Management professionals often speak about “data models”, “data governance”, “data warehouses”, “data architecture”, etc. They work very hard to understand what clients need in order to deliver superior products and services. The problem is the all-too frequent disconnect in communication which is part of the human dynamics process.

Fans of the show, NCIS often sense the team leader’s (Gibbs) frustration with his highly technical (and enthusiastic) lab and IT people (Abbey and McGee) – as they struggle to communicate with each other in high-pressure situations. Many of us have experienced the same thing time after time in the work environment and share this frustration. A critical gap in communication between technical and non-technical professionals can often be attributed to differences in personality preferences, an inability to express value in business terms and / or lack of skills in selling ideas to key decision makers. The session will focus on models, tools and techniques to improve the level of understanding, communication and influence skills necessary to ensure that key decision makers are clear on the value provided by IT / Data Management. Understanding and effectively communicating the Data Management value proposition from a business perspective can make or break major decisions on which efforts will receive support from a financial perspective (and those that will not).

Bio: Lynn Reed heads an international management consulting firm that specializes in improving organizational performance through the design and delivery of customized leadership and organizational development processes. Clients are predominantly senior and middle managers in world class firms in the financial services and other industries. Lynn provides advisory services focusing on the human dynamics elements of the business. Specific areas of focus include: team effectiveness, creative thinking, strategy development, leadership & executive development, problem solving / decision making and change management / culture change. Lynn is adept at working with teams in cross-functional and multi-national environments. He has a strong background in IT and nearly 50% of his business is in support of IT groups in major organizations.

Lynn has over 25 years’ experience in the financial services industry, in both line and support roles. He spent the major portion of his career at JP Morgan in New York, including a five-year assignment in the London Office as the Head of Organizational Development for JP Morgan Europe. Lynn holds an MBA in Computer Applications & Information Systems from New York University; he has completed two post-graduate programs in Human Resources Management and Organizational Development at Columbia University.

He has personally delivered seminars to tens of thousands of managers and professionals in over 20 countries around the world. Lynn’s expertise in group dynamics is second to none. His unique style of delivery combines a bottom line focus, rapid pace, high energy level and strong sense of humor to get the job done. Lynn has been interviewed and quoted as an expert in group dynamics by various publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Fortune Magazine and The American Banker.

Mastering Politics in Master Data Integration Efforts

Abstract: A key to any data integration effort such as a master data management, data warehousing or data governance effort, is understanding the personal, cultural, and political environment and consciously employing proven principles to enable success. The most successful data integration efforts usually share one thing in common: they developed and implemented effective strategies that provided fertile cultural and political ground for success.

This interactive presentation will share techniques to help understand key principles and empower participants in meeting objectives and moving toward effective integration of data. It will illustrate why some data integration efforts succeed and others fail and the instructor will share principles and techniques that can either help or hinder data integration efforts. Len Silverston will also share various insights, including pitfalls of where data integration efforts can and have gone off course and specific ways to establish a foundation for successful data integration.
Participants of this session will gain:
·         An understanding of political and cultural factors for which successful data integration teams need to be aware and prepared
·         Tools and principles to enable data integration such as keys in gaining and sustaining funding, realizing a common vision, developing trust, and managing conflict.
·         Stories of how culture and politics either fostered or killed data integration efforts.
·         Interactive discussions regarding the challenges that data integration professionals often face.
Cultural and political factors are often overlooked and this presentation will address important points that are key to successfully integrating data.

After the Angst: Sustaining the Changes OR Carrots, Sticks … or Heavy Weapons?
Abstract:Communicating value and getting support for any Information Management effort (MDM, DG, DW etc.) is a challenge; but what about a few months or a few years afterwards? Sustaining the program is just as important as selling it. Operational challenges can be as daunting as selling and starting the program.   Human Dynamics, Change Management and other organizational disciplines are just as vital after deployment of any program.
This presentation will cover real examples of scenarios from the speakers experience with Enterprise Information Management efforts and how change management and human dynamics were applied to defuse the situation, or where a valuable lesson was learned when the “wheels came off.” We will also review some operational techniques to keep DG and similar efforts sustainable.

Bio: John Ladley is an internationally known information management practitioner and a popular speaker who is widely published and has several regular columns.  Currently, John is President of IMCue Solutions, a new firm focused on data governance and enterprise information management Prior to IMCue, John was a Director with Navigant Consulting, founded KI Solutions, and John was Senior Program Director of Data Warehouse strategies and a Research Fellow at Meta Group.  John also edits the Data Strategy Journal, an independent web publication focused on data matters. He is an authority on information architectures, data governance, business performance measurement architectures, knowledge management, collaborative applications, and enterprise information management.

The Role of Human Dynamics in Successful Data Governance
Abstract: “Human Dynamics” refers to the ways people act in any setting – work, home, social, educational, etc. The combination of specific traits and influences give each individual a unique approach to circumstances and contribute to their reactions to any issue. The lack of recognition of these differences in human functioning has led to much misunderstanding, conflict, and wastage of individual and group potential especially in the work-place. Awareness of the differences, however, offers new opportunities for greater individual self-understanding and growth; for greater understanding of others; for improved communication and cooperation; for the conscious development of balanced teams in which all of the personality dynamics are represented, and in which the participants are able to work through consciously respecting each other's inherent processes and utilizing each other's gifts.
Data governance requires that people participate in development and execution of policies and practices that advance the management of data in an organization. Since Data Governance is a human endeavor, organizations would benefit from a better understanding of how human dynamics influence the data governance process.
This presentation will outline the concepts of Human Dynamics and apply them to the realm of data governance, offering some suggestions for improving the data governance practice through improved understanding of how we interact and perform.
